High Triglycerides? It Might Not Be What You Think

You’re sitting in the doctor’s office. The paper gown crinkles. The screen turns toward you.
“Your triglycerides are high.”
The standard advice follows:
Cut fat. Watch sugar. Maybe medication if it doesn’t improve.
And maybe cut anything that tastes good while you’re at it.
So you go home and Google:
“How to lower triglycerides naturally.”
But what you’re really wondering is:
What actually causes this in the first place?
Here’s the part that often gets missed.
When I see elevated triglycerides in my practice, I rarely treat them as a simple “fat problem.” More often, they’re a processing problem.
And that’s a very different conversation.
It’s Not Just About What You Eat — It’s About How You Process It
Yes, excess sugar and refined carbohydrates can raise triglycerides. That’s real.
But I also see elevated triglycerides alongside:
Sluggish digestion
Low stomach acid
Signs of bile flow issues
Blood sugar instability
Low-grade inflammation
That pattern shows up more often than people expect.
Your body isn’t malfunctioning.
It’s responding.
Triglycerides are a form of stored energy. They move through the bloodstream and get delivered where needed.
When digestion is strong, bile is flowing well, and blood sugar is steady, those deliveries happen smoothly.
When digestion is sluggish or inflammation is simmering, things don’t move as efficiently
— and labs reflect that.
That doesn’t mean you’re broken.
It means something upstream needs support.

The Bile Conversation Almost No One Is Having
Let’s talk about bile for a minute.
Bile helps break down fats and move cholesterol and triglycerides out of circulation. If bile flow is compromised — which can happen with stress, inflammation, low stomach acid, or digestive strain — fats aren’t processed efficiently.
This isn’t always about eating “too much fat.”
It’s often about flow.
Real talk: digestion drives more than most people realize.
The Gut–Inflammation Link
Your gut and microbiome influence how your liver behaves.
When the gut lining is irritated or the microbiome is out of balance, inflammatory signals travel to the liver. The liver responds by adjusting how fats are transported and stored — and sometimes that includes increasing triglycerides.
Again — that’s not dysfunction.
That’s adaptation.
This is why someone can be eating well, doing “all the right things,” and still see stubborn numbers.
We don’t fix that by restricting more.
We fix it by supporting digestion, calming inflammation, and improving metabolic flow.

So Where Do We Start?
Not with extremes.
Not with rice cakes.
Here’s where I usually begin:
Improve digestive capacity.
Support bile flow with bitter and aromatic foods.
Increase soluble fiber to feed beneficial gut bacteria.
Stabilize blood sugar so insulin signaling improves.
Address inflammation at the root.
Before supplements, we build the foundation.
Small hinges swing big doors.
Why Spring Is Actually a Smart Reset Point
Spring naturally nudges us toward lighter meals, more greens, more movement, and more fiber. Those shifts support digestion and bile flow — which makes this season a strategic time to reset gently.
Not aggressively.
Not dramatically.
Just steadily.
When digestion improves and inflammation calms, triglycerides often settle down as a downstream effect.
We’re not bullying lab numbers into submission.
We’re improving the environment upstream.
And your body responds to that.
If your triglycerides are elevated and you’re tired of guessing, this is exactly what we look at in a Functional Blood Chemistry session. We look at patterns — not just isolated numbers — and build a plan that supports how your body actually works.
Because you deserve more than a one-line interpretation of your labs.
