Leaky Gut and Inflammation: Why It Shows Up on Your Labs

The Truth About Leaky Gut and Stubborn Triglycerides

When most people hear “leaky gut,” they think digestive discomfort.

Bloating. Food reactions. A stomach that feels unpredictable.

They don’t think triglycerides.

They don’t think lipid panels.

They don’t think liver metabolism.

But in my practice, I often see leaky gut patterns show up alongside stubborn triglycerides.

And once you understand the physiology, the connection isn’t surprising at all.

What We’re Really Talking About When We Say “Leaky Gut”

“Leaky gut” is simply a term for increased intestinal permeability.

Your gut lining acts as a filter. It allows nutrients through while keeping larger inflammatory compounds contained.

When that lining is well supported, digestion runs quietly in the background.

When it’s under prolonged stress — poor sleep, chronic stress, lingering infections, microbiome imbalance, inflammatory foods — the barrier becomes more permeable.

That increased permeability is what people are referring to when they say “leaky gut.”

It doesn’t mean your system is falling apart.

It means the barrier needs reinforcement.

When the gut barrier becomes more permeable, inflammatory compounds can cross into circulation.

The immune system responds.

And that immune activity communicates with the liver.

When the liver detects ongoing inflammatory signals — which can stem from leaky gut — it adjusts how fats are packaged and transported in the bloodstream. One of those adjustments can include higher triglyceride levels.

From the outside, it looks like a lipid issue.

Underneath, it may be an immune and barrier issue.

That’s why someone can be eating well, moderating sugar, and still see triglycerides that refuse to budge.

The issue isn’t always what’s on the plate.

Sometimes it’s what’s happening at the gut lining.

Inflammation, Insulin, and Clearance

Low-grade inflammation also affects insulin signaling.

When insulin efficiency drops, triglycerides don’t clear from the bloodstream as effectively. Storage increases. Circulation lingers longer.

Over time, that pattern becomes visible on labs.

This isn’t about discipline.

It’s about physiology.

Why Spring Can Bring This to the Surface

Seasonal immune shifts, increased pollen exposure, and routine changes can add just enough pressure to reveal a gut barrier that was already working hard.

Some people feel it in digestion.

Others only see it reflected in lab work.

Either way, it’s feedback.

And feedback is useful.

Spring becomes less about restriction and more about strengthening the foundation.

What Supporting Leaky Gut Actually Looks Like

Reinforcing the gut barrier doesn’t require dramatic overhauls.

In practice, I focus on:

  • Warm, cooked meals to reduce digestive strain

  • Soluble fiber to nourish beneficial bacteria

  • Polyphenol-rich plants to calm inflammatory signaling

  • Bitter and aromatic foods to support digestive flow

  • Stable blood sugar to reduce immune stress

Consistency matters more than intensity.

When the gut lining stabilizes and inflammation quiets, lipid patterns often improve alongside it.

Looking Upstream Changes the Strategy

If triglycerides are elevated alongside digestive symptoms or subtle inflammatory markers, it’s worth asking whether leaky gut may be part of the picture.

Not as a trend.

Not as a dramatic diagnosis.

Just as a practical physiological system that influences immune tone and liver metabolism every day.

When we reinforce the barrier and calm inflammation, the numbers often follow.

Steady inputs.

Steady outcomes.
