The Summer Nutrition Mistake I See Most Often

Eating lighter doesn't have to mean eating less protein.
Every summer, I notice the same pattern.
The weather gets hotter. Farmers markets are overflowing with fresh produce. Smoothies replace breakfasts. Salads replace sandwiches. Fruit becomes a perfectly acceptable lunch.
And honestly? That makes perfect sense.
When it's 95 degrees outside with enough humidity to make your hair start auditioning for a role in a 1980s rock band, a heavy meal doesn't exactly sound appealing.
The problem isn't that people start eating lighter.
The problem is what quietly disappears from the plate.
Protein.
And that's one of the most common nutrition mistakes I see during the summer months.
The Sneaky Protein Gap
Most people don't wake up and decide to eat less protein.
It happens accidentally.
Breakfast becomes a smoothie.
Lunch becomes a salad.
Dinner becomes a handful of crackers while standing in front of the refrigerator wondering why nothing sounds good.
By the end of the day, you've eaten plenty of food but very little protein.
A pattern I frequently notice when reviewing food journals is that people are often surprised by how low their protein intake actually is. They thought they were eating enough because they were eating healthy.
Those aren't always the same thing.
Interestingly, research suggests that people often eat less overall during hot weather because appetite naturally decreases. While that may sound harmless, it can make it surprisingly easy to fall short on protein without realizing it.

A Quick Summer Protein Reality Check
A smoothie can be healthy.
A salad can be healthy.
A bowl of fruit can be healthy.
But healthy doesn't automatically mean protein-rich.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that people assume nutrient-dense foods automatically contain enough protein. Often they don't.
You can be eating lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber while still missing the protein your body needs to function optimally.
Signs You May Be Missing the Mark on Protein
You may want to take a closer look at your protein intake if you:
Feel hungry shortly after meals
Find yourself constantly reaching for snacks
Experience afternoon energy crashes
Feel like you're eating healthy but never quite satisfied
Struggle to maintain muscle as you age
Notice slower recovery after exercise
Feel like your meals are missing something, even when they're full of healthy foods
Now, none of these symptoms automatically mean you need more protein.
But they can be clues worth paying attention to.
Why Protein Still Matters When It's Hot Outside
Your body's need for protein doesn't disappear when summer arrives.
Protein helps support:
Muscle maintenance
Healthy skin
Hair and nail growth
Joint and connective tissue health
Digestive function
Balanced energy
Healthy body composition
Satiety and fullness
This becomes even more important as we get older.
Beginning around age 30, we naturally start losing muscle mass over time. That process doesn't stop simply because we're eating watermelon by the pool.
Research continues to show that adequate protein intake plays an important role in maintaining muscle as we age, especially when paired with regular movement and strength training.
In other words:
Summer is not the season to send your protein goals on vacation.
Why This Matters Beyond Muscle
When most people hear the word protein, they immediately picture bodybuilders carrying gallon water jugs.
Most of my clients aren't trying to become bodybuilders.
They're trying to:
Have more energy
Feel mentally sharp
Reduce cravings
Support healthy aging
Maintain a healthy weight
Feel confident they're nourishing their body well
Protein can support many of those goals because it helps create a greater sense of fullness and satisfaction after meals.
If your lunch consists of lettuce, cucumber, and positive thinking, there's a good chance you'll be rummaging through the pantry by 3:00 PM.

Easy Summer Protein Upgrades
The good news is that increasing protein doesn't require eating heavy meals.
A few simple swaps can make a big difference.
Easy Summer Protein Upgrades
If you're having... A fruit smoothie A basic garden salad Fruit as a snack A meal built mostly around carbohydrates | Try adding... Add a scoop of clean protein powder, collagen peptides, hemp hearts, or chia seeds. Add 3–5 oz of chicken, turkey, shrimp, salmon, tuna, tofu, tempeh, or two hard-boiled eggs. Pair it with nuts, seeds, turkey slices, beef jerky (low sugar), or a hard-boiled egg. A protein source first, then build the rest of the meal around it |
One simple question can change everything:
"Where is the protein in this meal?"
An Easy Summer Addition: Collagen Peptides
One supplement I often recommend during the summer months is collagen peptides.
Collagen provides amino acids that support many of the body's structural tissues, including skin, joints, connective tissue, and the digestive tract.
What makes collagen especially helpful during hot weather is how easy it is to incorporate into foods and drinks that people are already enjoying.
You can stir collagen peptides into:
Smoothies
Iced coffee
Chia pudding
Overnight oats
Yogurt bowls
No blender gymnastics required.
Research suggests collagen peptides may support skin hydration, elasticity, and connective tissue health, making them an appealing option for people looking to support healthy aging while also increasing their daily protein intake.
One option I particularly like is Thorne Collagen Plus in the berry flavor. It mixes easily into cold beverages and offers a convenient way to boost protein intake without adding another heavy meal to your day.
What You Can Do About This
If you've been feeling more tired, hungrier, or less satisfied with your meals this summer, take a closer look at your protein intake before assuming something more complicated is going on.
You may not need a complete nutrition overhaul.
You may simply need more protein than you're currently getting.
Start by aiming to include a quality protein source every time you eat.
Your muscles, energy, skin, joints, and appetite will all thank you for it.
And the best part?
You can still enjoy every peach, berry, cucumber, and summer salad you love.
Just don't forget to invite protein to the party.
